Let him go. If he thought that religion was going to get in the way, it wasn't going to work out anyway - and it was hardly fair or "sweet" of him to ask you to uproot your whole life under those cirstances. Partners make big decisions together, and he clearly doesn't want to be a partner if he's not even willing to talk through the problems with you. Find someone who does instead.
