What is funny these days?

It seems like you just can't laugh at ANYTHING anymore without feeling a twinge of discomfort or self consciousness. Don't you think that jokes about stereotypes can be funny? Aren't jokes just like a funny examination/observation about reality? So why can't we joke about ourselves and eachother without it being twisted into something completely offensive? And if we can't...then what is funny these days? I understand that some people seriously believe and validate stereotypes, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about casual joking.
